Activision announces sequel to Geometry Wars and King’s Quest
Sierra, which is being revived by owner Activision, will produce new games for the first time in years. These include a sequel to Geometry Wars and King’s Quest, as well as new titles.
Last Saturday, it looked as though Activision might want to revive Sierra as the publisher launched a new website for the studio. As it turns out, that new life for Sierra is indeed coming, writes VentureBeat. These include a sequel to Sierra’s own King’s Quest, as well as a new Geometry Wars game. Geometry Wars was originally developed by Bizarre Creations, but Activision closed that studio in 2011.
Although King’s Quest was originally developed by Sierra and will soon be released under that banner, the new game is being developed by the California development studio The Odd Gentlemen. This makes Sierra appear to be primarily a brand name that is stuck on games, and not so much a business unit that produces games itself.
It is unknown if Activision also has plans for a sequel to Sierra’s Crash Bandicoot series. It is clear that Sierra must do more than publish sequels to existing game series: the intention is that Activision will release innovative projects from indie developers under the Sierra banner. Activision took over the rights and assets from Sierra when it acquired Vivendi in 2008, but so far the publisher has done nothing with it.
