‘A quarter of Facebook’s annual revenue came from Instagram’
More than a quarter of Facebook’s revenue in 2019 would come from Instagram. That is what sources say to financial news agency Bloomberg; the figures are not public. It would be about 20 billion dollars. The income comes from advertisements.
Facebook announced its financial figures for 2019 at the end of January. At the time, the company reported revenue of $70.7 billion, of which $69.7 billion was from advertising. Facebook itself has never disclosed how much revenue it gets from Instagram, the company only mentions the total revenue.
According to Bloomberg, sources familiar with the numbers say Instagram had a revenue of more than $20 billion in 2019. If that’s true, Instagram delivers more than YouTube. Alphabet recently announced that YouTube made $15 billion last year. Both Instagram and YouTube derive their revenue almost entirely from advertising.
Facebook took over Instagram in 2012 and paid $715 million for it at the time. At the time, the service had about 80 million users. In 2018, Instagram had one billion users according to Facebook. That’s the most recent figure.
