Apple would like to equip its iPad Pro and MacBook Pro with a panel based on mini LEDs from 2021, according to information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This should lead to LCDs with a higher contrast.

The iPad Pro with mini LEDs should be released in early 2021, with a model of the MacBook Pro with such a screen a few months later, 9to5Mac reports based on information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. That analyst is known for his information about unannounced Apple products. The iPad and MacBook would get about 10,000 mini LEDs.

Apple announced the Pro Display XDR earlier this year. This $5,000 or $6,000 screen has 576 LEDs to dim parts of the screen. This is a fald-backlight, in which 576 zones can be dimmed individually. Some current high-end fald monitors still go up to 384 zones, although Asus announced a monitor with 1152 individually controlled mini LEDs in September.

The use of a backlight consisting of mini LEDs should result in a high contrast, good HDR reproduction and uniform display. If Apple actually applies this in the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro from 2021, it will have to become clear whether all 10,000 mini LEDs can be switched off individually or whether it still concerns a relatively large number of dimmable zones. With the even smaller microLEDs or OLEDs, the LEDs can be switched on or off individually.
