Rumor: Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 gets new AMD laptop processors

According to a rumor, Microsoft will equip its upcoming Surface Laptop 3 with AMD processors. It could also be new chips with six or eight cores. AMD does not yet have laptop processors with more than four cores.

WinFuture says it has a list of dollar prices and specifications of the Surface Laptop 3. The information is in the hands of journalist Roland Quandt, who regularly publishes information about new products at an early stage. He says it is not possible to say with certainty that the information is correct, but in his article he writes that it appears to be an internal Microsoft document.

Earlier, information came out about the arrival of that laptop with a 15.6 “screen. According to WinFuture, the document states that the laptop will get AMD Ryzen processors with four, six or eight cores. This is striking because AMD does not laptop processors with more than four cores currently.

There are no concrete indications about the arrival of new Ryzen processors for laptops. There is a possibility that AMD will introduce it in collaboration with Microsoft. It would be striking, however, that nothing has been leaked about it so far. WinFuture notes that it is possible that Microsoft will use the Epyc Embedded 3000 processors. Eight-core variants have been released with a configurable TDP of 25 to 55 watts. These chips are still based on Zen 1 cores that are made at 14nm and do not have an integrated GPU. So a video card would have to be added.

Twitterer Tum Apisak recently spotted Microsoft hardware with Ryzen 5 3550U and Ryzen 7 3750U. This may include Surface Laptop 3 models. AMD does not yet have processors with those exact designations in its range, but the product names are very similar to the existing Ryzen 5 3550H and Ryzen 7 3750H, which are both quad-cores. It seems unlikely that the U variants have more cores. It would be more economical versions.

Microsoft will announce new products on October 2. In addition to the Surface Laptop 3, the company is also expected to show a Surface device with two screens, possibly also with a new Windows version for those types of devices.
