GitHub has introduced a new program for students that gives them access to the Unreal Engine during their studies, among other things. They also get a GitHub subscription for use throughout their studies.

Until now, students received a free GitHub subscription for up to two years, but that restriction no longer applies. However, there is a restriction of five private git repositories. Access to the Unreal Engine is also free throughout the study; normally that costs 19 dollars, or 15 euros, per month.

Anyone who is 13 years of age or older, has a school email address and can prove that they are studying can apply for the new student program. Students also receive a free domain name through Namecheap for one year, which also includes an SSL certificate, as well as $100 worth of hosting through DigitalOcean.

Other companies also have special programs for students, in order to retain them in this way: the idea is that students will continue to work with the tools they are familiar with once they have graduated. For example, Microsoft has the DreamSpark program, which allows students to use Windows Server and Visual Studio for free, among other things. Jetbrains also gives away free programs to students.
