‘Google is interested in modular screen technology’
Google would be interested in a technology for displays, where the screen consists of different parts. According to rumors, these parts could be clicked together like Lego, while it still remains borderless.
The rumors have been brought out by the usually well-informed The Wall Street Journal. According to three sources from the American business newspaper, Google plans to develop screens that consist of different parts and can be clicked together to form a single image. The screen parts could be connected to each other like Lego. By clicking several parts together, screens can be made of different sizes, which are therefore based on the same building blocks.
The clickable screen is being developed by a team led by Mary Lou Jepsen, who is also involved in the One Laptop Per Child project and previously worked as a professor at MIT technology institute. Jepsen is said to be in charge of a division within the secretive Google X lab.
Google is already working on modular technology under the name Project Ara, a smartphone concept. It was previously announced that the parts of Google’s modular phone will be hot-swappable. This means that parts can be replaced without having to turn off the smartphone. Only for the cpu and the screen applies that the device must be switched off.
Google announced Project Ara some time ago, but the final product has not yet been released. The company expects to be able to show a prototype at a developer conference in December, with the modular smartphone on the market next year. However, it is unclear whether the modular screen will also be used for Project Ara. It seems more likely that Google wants to use the technology for devices that require larger screens, such as televisions.
