Sponsored content must now be recognizable on Twitch and Steam
Download service Steam and streaming service Twitch are going to tighten their rules on paid and sponsored content. On both platforms, it must be made known in the future if an individual receives any form of compensation for a recommendation or stream.
So-called ‘curators’ can recommend or advise against games via the Steam download service. The company has now imposed an additional rule on the trustees. If a person receives money or is otherwise compensated in exchange for a review, this must be explicitly stated in the message from now on. Steam has added the rule to its terms, Hardcoregamer has noted.
The streaming service Twitch comes with a similar concept. The company promises to make a clearer distinction between paid and unpaid streams in the future. According to the company, the fact that players are increasingly being compensated for their broadcast is not necessarily a bad development. However, some streams are in a gray area, making it unclear to the viewer what exactly is being watched. Twitch claims to strive for complete transparency.
From now on, a tag should make it clear whether a paid or unpaid stream is being watched. In this way, viewers should be able to trace back to which type of content they are currently watching.
