Asus announces G551 and G771 gaming laptops

Asus has announced new 15.6″ and 17.3″ laptops in its Republic of Gamer series. The manufacturer will equip the G551 and G771 models with aluminum housings of GeForce GTX 860M cards and Core i7 quad-cores.

The G551 from Asus is very similar to the G550 but has been given an even more minimal housing. The G771 is very different from the other G750 laptop in Asus’ ROG series and does not have the stealth design of that model, with many corners and the large fan openings at the back, but a simple and sleek chassis. The laptops have an aluminum housing and are black with red accents and backlighting for the keyboard.

The G551 is 28mm thick at its thinnest point and 31.5mm at its thickest, with a weight of 2.7kg. At 30.4 and 35.6 mm respectively, the G771 is a lot thicker and the weight is also higher: 3.4 kilos.

Under the hood, Asus places the Core i7-4710HQ or the Core i5-4200H, in combination with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M with 2GB or 4GB gddr5. Both laptops come in variants with an IPS panel and a maximum of full HD resolution, but there are also models with lesser screen specifications. The laptops can contain a maximum of 16GB DDR3 RAM and there are various storage options, including 1.5TB HDD storage, HDD storage with additional 24GB SSD cache and SSDs with a maximum capacity of 256GB. The G771 can also have PCI-e SSDs up to 512GB.

There is a mini-displayport and hdmi 1.4 for connection to up to three external screens. There is no support for wifi-ac: the support is stuck on wifi-n. Asus has yet to announce pricing and availability.
