Onkyo acquires Pioneer audiovisual branch

Onkyo acquires Pioneer’s audiovisual business, which includes the business units for receivers, DVD and Blu-ray players, wireless speakers and hi-fi systems. Pioneer’s DJ branch is not part of the takeover.

In exchange for the acquisition of the AV branch, Pioneer takes a 14.95 percent stake in Onkyo. Japan’s Onkyo will not take over the DJ product business from Pioneer. However, Pioneer is trying to sell that branch, Reuters writes. That business unit is responsible for headphones, mixing consoles, turntables and DJ accessories.

Pioneer has been withdrawing from the audio-visual equipment market for some time now. The manufacturer already announced in 2008 that it would stop producing plasma panels for TVs. The Japanese concern focuses, among other things, on the market for car entertainment. Pioneer and Onkyo want the acquisition to be completed by the end of October, after which the integration of the AV branch in Onkyo should be completed in March 2015.
