iOS 15.1 Beta Adds ProRes Support to iPhone 13 Pro Series – Update
The third iOS 15.1 beta adds ProRes support to the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Apple reported on the iPhone 13 announcement that the Pro models will receive ProRes support, but this was missing at release. It is not yet known when iOS 15.1 will be released.
The addition of ProRes support isn’t specifically mentioned in Apple’s patch notes, but 9to5Mac notes that the option has now been added to the most recent beta version of Apple’s mobile OS. The ProRes codec can be enabled through the iPhone settings, under ‘camera’ and ‘formats’. When users do that, the ProRes options will appear in the iOS default camera app. Filmic Pro already received ProRes support for iPhone 13 Pro devices.
ProRes makes it possible to record videos with higher bitrates, giving more space to edit the images afterwards. Users can record 4k ProRes videos at up to 30fps. With a 1080p resolution, the frame rate is increased to a maximum of 60fps. Due to the higher bit rates, ProRes videos require more storage space. Apple reports in the iPhone settings that a minute of ProRes images at 4k takes about 6GB of storage space.
ProRes in 4k is only available for iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max devices with 256GB of storage or more. iPhone 13 Pro devices with 128GB storage can only record ProRes videos at 1080p and iPhone models cannot record videos at all with the ProRes codec.
Update, 11:58 PM: The article previously incorrectly stated that iPhone 13 Pro devices with 128GB storage cannot record ProRes videos. Such devices can, but only at 1080p. The article has been adapted accordingly. Thanks to SgtElPotato.
