Panasonic is demonstrating a 55″ television at the IFA that has a 4k LCD but uses a second black-and-white panel as backlight. According to the manufacturer, this makes a higher contrast ratio possible.

Panasonic is developing its prototype for a dual panel LCD under the name MegaCon, which stands for ‘mega contrast’. According to the manufacturer, the monochrome rear panel allows dimming ‘at the pixel level’, but the company does not mention a resolution for the backlight panel. The company also does not mention in its press release how a parallax effect is prevented.

However, Panasonic does release that the screen offers a maximum screen brightness for the entire screen of 1000cd/m², has a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and can display 99 percent of the dci-p3 color space. The manufacturer has developed the technology itself, although the concept is very similar to the ULED XD that HiSense showed at the beginning of this year. That screen had a 4k outer panel and monochrome 1080p back panel.

As far as we know, Panasonic has no plans to release the MegaCon and whether the concept will be used for consumer TVs is still the question. Panasonic is also showing a transparent OLED screen with a wooden frame at IFA, but the company demonstrated that earlier this year.
