Super Nintendo World is getting a Donkey Kong expansion in 2024
A new section of the Super Nintendo World themed area, which is part of the Japanese Universal Studios theme park, is planned for 2024. This expansion, which is entirely devoted to the Donkey Kong series, will expand the area by about 70 increase percent.
The new area will contain a roller coaster, “interactive experiences” and Donkey Kong-themed refreshments, as well as places to buy merchandise based on the game franchise, according to Nintendo. The environment itself will be given a jungle theme, as that is the habitat of Donkey Kong. According to the image revealed by Nintendo, the area will also contain a large temple, which looks like it will take up quite a bit of the new area. Around the temple is the roller coaster, whose wagons consist of mine carts, to simulate the mining levels from the Donkey Kong Country games.
The Universal parks are real theme parks à la De Efteling, where a lot of attention is paid to the decoration of the areas. Each themed area is based on a different franchise. In the park in Japan, for example, in addition to the Nintendo area, there are also places with a Harry Potter, Jurassic Park and Minions theme. There are usually only one or two attractions per area, but the environment is dressed from head to toe to resemble the world of the source material as much as possible.
For example, the Super Nintendo World area currently consists of a Mario world, full of moving enemies and life-sized castles of Peach and Bowser. The restaurants are also completely themed, for example, there is a Toad house in which mushroom-related dishes are ‘served’ by Toads, who are supposedly preparing everything via a screen in the restaurant.
The Super Nintendo World themed area opened in February at Universal Studios Japan. A Super Nintendo World area is also planned for the Universal theme parks in Orlando, Hollywood and Singapore. It is not yet known whether those parks will ever receive a Donkey Kong expansion.
