Ten teams to recreate Star Trek Tricorder in competition
Ten finalists will try to make the Tricorder from the Star Trek series in real life. The devices may weigh a maximum of 2.3 kg and must be able to easily detect at least sixteen conditions with a single device.
The ten finalists have been chosen from 21 entrants to make it to the finals of chipmaker Qualcomm’s Xprize Tricorder competition. Because they are now in the final, they now have to turn their idea into a working device. This must be done before the middle of next year, after which the winner will receive a prize of more than five million euros in early 2016.
The goal is for the finalists to build a device that works much like the Tricorder in Star Trek, a device that can diagnose a variety of health problems without extensive physical examination. The winning device should be able to diagnose 16 different medical conditions without the need for extensive physical examinations, including diabetes and stroke. This must be done in a single device that weighs a maximum of 2.3 kg and is reusable. It should also be easy enough to use for people who are not medical professionals.
The ten finalists are mostly competing companies, some of which were established for the competition, as evidenced by a name like Final Frontier Medical Devices, a nod to the lyrics from the intro to Star Trek: The Next Generation. .
