Apple will replace battery for some iPhone 5 models for free

Apple will replace the battery of the iPhone 5 for free in some cases. The company has found that in certain models the battery can suddenly last less. Users can check themselves whether they are eligible for replacement.

9 To 5 Mac discovered that Apple has opened a web page announcing that it will replace the battery on certain iPhone 5 models for free. On the site of the so-called battery replacement program, iPhone owners must enter their serial number to find out if they are eligible for a new battery. According to Apple, these are models of the iPhone 5 that were sold between September 2012 and January 2013.

The exchange program is immediately available to US and Chinese customers. Beginning August 29, iPhone 5 owners in the rest of the world will be able to get a new battery if they qualify for the program. Customers should send their iPhone 5 to an Apple retail store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Customers who qualify for the replacement program but have previously had their battery replaced can in some cases get their money back, according to Apple. Until March 1, 2015 it is possible to exchange the battery. According to Apple, the replacement program does not extend the warranty on the iPhone 5.

It is not the first time that Apple has launched a repair program for the iPhone 5. Earlier this year, the company announced that it would replace the power button for users who have an iPhone 5 that falls within a certain batch. This is also a worldwide repair program.
