Plex introduces new desktop app and ends HTPC support

Plex has released a new desktop application for Windows, which should replace the version in the Windows Store. In addition, Plex Media Player and support for an HTPC setup will also come to an end.

The company behind Plex makes this known via a post on its blog. The new desktop application is immediately available for download from the download page on the Plex website, with support for Windows and Mac. The company calls it an equivalent of the Android and iOS versions of the application, but intended for desktop operating systems. The new app has the new ‘Download’ functionality for making media available offline, which does require the Plex Pass subscription form.

As a result of the release of the new desktop application, support for Plex Media Player is also ending. The intention is that the new desktop application will become the replacement. Plex will also no longer focus on users who have an HTPC connected to their TV, since there is no TV mode in the new application. Plex Media Player will still be supported until the end of January next year.

In addition, Plex has announced that it will continue to focus on Windows and Mac for the time being. A Linux version is being considered, but it doesn’t seem to be coming out anytime soon.
