HMD gives Nokia smartphones from 2017 years longer updates

The Finnish HMD Global is giving the Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 8 from 2017 updates for a year longer than it previously promised. From October, the updates will come every three months until October 2020. Support for the Nokia 2 from 2017 will end this fall.

HMD promised two years of security updates when the phones were released, but has now decided to stick to it for a year. As a result, the devices from 2017 will have received a total of slightly more than three years of updates before support ends in October 2020. Whether newer models will also receive updates for three years is still unknown.

The Finnish manufacturer wants to distinguish itself in the smartphone market with smartphones that get updates quickly and stay up-to-date for a long time. The Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 8 went on sale in the Benelux in the summer of 2017, following an announcement in March of that year. They were the first models that HMD released in Europe. The Nokia 6 was already for sale in China for some time. Support for the Nokia 2 will end this fall. That phone is still on Android 8 and will not get an upgrade to Android 9 Pie.

The 2017 Nokias are not in the Android One program. Newer models such as the Nokia 7 Plus and 8 Sirocco are Android One phones. With Android One, manufacturers promise to release a security update at least every quarter for three years. The models from 2018 will therefore receive support until 2021.
