Oculus CEO and co-founder leaves Facebook

Nate Mitchell leaves Oculus, the Facebook subsidiary. He says he takes time for himself and his family. Mitchell co-founded Oculus and after its acquisition by Facebook, he worked there as head of product management for virtual reality.

Mitchell announces his departure on Reddit. It doesn’t look like the Oculus CEO will start working for another company right away; in the statement he writes to take time for himself, his family and to travel. He also says that it is unknown what the future will bring. He gives no reason for his departure from Facebook.

With Mitchell leaving the company, all of the original founders of Oculus have disappeared from the company. Late last year, former Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe left, reportedly due to disagreements over hardware development. Facebook would have scrapped a Rift 2 with better specs for the PC, and Iribe disagreed.

Palmer Luckey, co-founder and designer of the Oculus Rift left Facebook in 2017. His departure followed a fuss about money Luckey invested in an organization that had the goal of discrediting presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Oculus and Facebook have yet to comment on Mitchell’s departure. It is unknown who will be his successor. Oculus released its standalone glasses Quest earlier this year and the Rift S. The latter is an improved version of the original Rift.
