The Australian Blackmagic Design comes with a new version of its Pocket Cinema Camera. The new model gets a larger sensor and can film in 6k resolution in raw format. Blackmagic gives the device a Canon EF mount.

The new BMPCC6K will be added to the range alongside the BMPCC4K. That previously released version has a microfourthirdssensor with a 4k movie function. The new model has a sensor with dimensions of 23x13mm, which corresponds to aps-c in still cameras. The maximum film resolution is 6144×3456 pixels and at that 16:9 ratio the maximum shooting speed is 50fps. That speed goes up to 60fps when filming at a lower vertical resolution and 2.4:1 aspect ratio.

Also, the camera can shoot in 120fps at a resolution of 2868×1512 pixels and there is a movie mode with a 6:5 ratio intended for use with anamorphic lenses, where the image is stretched in post-processing. Such lenses are still widely used in the film industry because of the characteristic oval representation of background blur and the striking lens flares.

According to Blackmagic, the sensor has a dynamic range of thirteen stops and a dual native ISO of 400 and 25,600. Movie files can be saved in ProRes format with a color depth of 10bit. The resolution is limited to 4k. In Blackmagic’s proprietary raw format, 6k video can be captured with a color depth of 12bit. There is a CFast 2.0 slot for such files and it is also possible to record to an external SSD via the USB-C connection.

The small camera is equipped with an EF mount with electronic contacts and has a 5 “touch screen on the back. The camera costs $ 2495, converted with VAT that is about 2700 euros. The 4k model with MFT sensor remains also available.

Blackmagic is known for its relatively inexpensive professional film cameras. For example, the Pocket can be used as an extra camera or in small spaces. The BMPCCs are also popular with filmmakers with a small budget. The 6k variant is the third camera in the series.
