Samsung introduces Exynos modem based on the latest 5g standard
Samsung presents a 5g modem that supports the Release 15 techniques of the 3GPP standard. The maximum download speed is 6Gbit / s on high frequencies with mmWave and 2Gbit / s at low frequencies. SAM does not mention upload speeds.
The modem can handle 5g networks at high and low frequencies. For high frequencies, mmWave networks are used at, for example, 28 or 39GHz. These high frequencies make very high speeds possible, but have limited coverage. The modem can also handle frequencies lower than 6GHz, while the coverage is larger, but the maximum speed is lower.
Furthermore, the modem can handle older network techniques such as 4g, 3g and 2g. The maximum download speed at 4g is 1.6Gbit / s. Samsung’s current modems reach 1.2Gbit / s on 4g networks.
The current modem is a loose chip, Samsung has not yet announced an Exynos-soc with an integrated 5g modem. At the beginning of this year there was a rumor that Samsung next year wants to release an Exynos-soc with 5g support .
Samsung will make the modem available to customers at the end of this year. For example, it can be used in cars and for iot applications. At the beginning of this month, the South Korean manufacturer announced to invest heavily in the coming years among other things to become a major player on the market for 5g chipsets.
