WhatsApp comes out for KaiOS
WhatsApp has released a version of the chat app for KaiOS, the operating system of, among other things, the cheap Nokia feature phones. The application can be downloaded from the KaiStore and will be included as standard on the phones in the future.
This allows WhatsApp to be used on low-end feature phones such as the Nokia 8110, the remake of the well-known ‘Matrix phone’ that came out two years ago. KaiOS also runs on a small number of other phones such as those from Cat and JioPhone. The operating system is a fork of Firefox OS and is on 100 million phones. From the third quarter of this year, WhatsApp will be installed as standard on all KaiOS devices.
WhatsApp fits all phones with at least 256MB of RAM. The app on KaiOS has the same capabilities as on Android and iOS. For example, end-to-end encryption is in place to keep messages private, and users can also make calls in addition to chatting. WhatsApp does not say whether video calling is also supported.
