Google calls in volunteers for Translate
Google has set up Translate Community, with which it hopes to motivate users to contribute to translations for the Translate service. It also becomes easier to provide a better translation directly from Translate.
With the Translate Community, users get tools to help Google with translations for languages they speak fluently. Whoever registers can choose which languages he or she wants to contribute. The user can then assist with the translation of words or phrases, assess the quality of translations, and help choose between several alternative translations for a word or phrase. With community input, Google hopes to improve the quality and scope of its translation service.
Interested users can start translating through a dedicated webpage for the Translate Community. It is currently only possible to submit new translations and indicate whether existing translations are right or wrong. In the long run, Google states that it wants to expand the Translate Community with new possibilities. In that case, volunteers must also gain insight into what their contribution is to the translation service.
For those who don’t have the time or inclination to contribute to the Translate Community, Google has made it easier to provide a better translation when using the Translate service. For example, it has recently become possible to submit a completely new translation for a word or phrase, according to Google.
