Chinese team wins 3.7 million euros in Dota 2 tournament
Newbee, a Chinese team that participated in The International, has won the Dota 2 tournament. The five players may share the top prize of 5 million dollars, or 3.7 million euros. An additional $5 million in prize money is available for the other teams.
The Chinese Newbee managed to win the final of The International last night against the also Chinese team ViCi Gaming. Newbee lost the first match of the best of five final, but then won the next three. Newbee won $5,028,174, more than 3.7 million euros. For ViCi Gaming, 1,475,660 dollars, approximately 1.1 million euros, was ready.
With over $10 million in prize money, The International is the eSports tournament with the largest prize pool ever. The $5 million won by Newbee is also the largest prize ever earned from eSports. The tournament is organized by Valve, the studio behind Dota 2. It is the fourth edition of the tournament. This year’s prize pool is significantly higher than that of previous years. In 2013, there was a total of 2.9 million dollars, or 2.14 million euros, in the pot.
The prize money is so high because it is largely raised by the Dota 2 community. Valve put 1.6 million dollars, or 1.18 million euros, into the pot, the rest was raised by players. Valve sells Compendiums, items that players can use in-game. Valve will put a quarter of the proceeds into the tournament prize pool. The International was fought in Seattle’s Key Arena, a venue that could seat 17,000 spectators.
