‘LG can restore dead pixels on OLED panels with laser’

LG Display has developed a technology for its OLED production in which dead pixels can be brought back to life with the help of lasers. This could reduce production costs for the currently relatively expensive OLED panels.

That reports the Korean site ETnews. LG is said to have developed various techniques in an attempt to reduce the costs for OLED panels. For example, the manufacturer would be able to reactivate dead pixels on OLED panels using a laser beam. It is not known exactly how LG’s laser technology works. The South Korean company can cut costs if it manages to produce more OLED panels without defective pixels.

Samsung is also said to have developed improved technology for its OLED panels in an attempt to reduce costs. These are flexible OLED panels that cannot use glass as a top layer because of their flexibility. Samsung is said to have made progress by reducing the number of layers of flexible OLED panels from seven to three, while the inorganic layer now consists of nitride instead of ceramide. As with LG’s technology, few details are known about Samsung’s progress.

A number of electronics manufacturers have been trying for years to reduce the production costs for OLED panels in an attempt to also make larger screens affordable. Partly because of the high price for an OLED TV, Samsung announced last month that it has put the construction of a large-scale production facility for OLED panels on hold for the time being.
