Diy computer with dimensions of 25x25mm goes into production
Through the crowdfunding site IndieGogo, Chinese developers have raised enough money to produce a “computer” the size of a coin that runs on Linux. The VoCore V1.0 has dimensions of 25mm by 25mm and runs OpenWrt in addition to Linux.
The VoCore has 32MB of RAM, has 8MB of SPI-flash memory and contains an RT5350-soc from Ralink that can reach clock speeds of up to 360MHz. The computer currently offers interfaces for i2c, i2s, uart and more than twenty general-purpose inputs and outputs, among others. Unlike the Rasberry Pi, the VoCore does not have video outputs; as a result, the VoCore cannot be used as a basis for, for example, a retro gaming machine.
The power of the computer is mainly in the 802.11n Wi-Fi support, the USB interface and the Ethernet with speeds of 10/100M. Using OpenWrt, users can turn the VoCore into a VPN router that they can take with them wherever they go. The mini computer operates on a voltage between 3.3 volts to 6 volts.
The developers mention as further applications for the VoCore, among other things, the use for making printers, hard disks and DIY speaker sets wireless. Currently, anyone who donates $20 or more through the IndieGogo campaign will receive a VoCore. The VoCore is expected to be sent in October this year to all those who have supported the project with sufficient funds.
