EA shuts down Mythic Entertainment
Electronic Arts is closing its MMO and RPG studio Mythic Entertainment. The studio is responsible for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning and Dark Age of Camelot, among others. The studio’s closure has been confirmed by EA in a response to Kotaku.
The statement to Kotaku shows that the reason for closing Mythic is that EA wants to use other studios for the development of mobile games. It is not clear how many employees will be affected by the studio closing. Mythic Entertainment was best known for 2001’s mmog Dark Age of Camelot, which is still played today. In February, the MMO was handed over to Broadsword Online, a new studio founded by Mythic co-founder Rob Denton, who involved some of the studio’s “veterans.”
In December 2013, Mythic was forced to pull the plug on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. The license with Games Workshop, the company behind the Warhammer franchise, had expired. According to the producer, it was hard to say goodbye to the game that had been in the air for five years.
In recent years, the studio has mainly focused on developing mobile games, including Dungeon Keeper Mobile which was released in October 2013. The game, available for iOS and Android, was settled on the way it makes money. Dungeon Keeper Mobile works with in-app purchases. Peter Molyneux, creator of the original 1997 Dungeon Keeper game, even called the game ridiculous.
EA tries to help all affected employees find new jobs within the company or another company. Mythic Entertaiment was active in the game industry for over twenty years and was acquired by EA in 2006.
