Microsoft warns of Windows XP registry hack to get ‘updates’
Microsoft warns XP users against using a registry hack to continue receiving updates. Users who apply the hack run the risk that their operating system will no longer function properly.
On Monday it was announced that with a change in the registry it is possible to install updates on the now no longer supported Windows XP. This brings in downloads that are actually intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003. The registry hack only works with 32-bit versions of Windows XP.
In a response, Microsoft has since warned ZDnet against applying the registry hack. According to the company, the updates have not been tested on Windows XP and do not provide full protection against new vulnerabilities. In addition, there is a risk that users who install the updates anyway will end up with a malfunctioning operating system or that the operating system will stop working altogether.
So far, Microsoft has not blocked the update option. The software giant advises XP users to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
