Rumor: Google wants to acquire security camera company
Google has plans to acquire Dropcam, a company that markets security cameras that allow users to view the images via their smartphone, among other things. That reports the American site The Information.
Google would ‘consider’ a takeover of Dropcam, according to The Information, but it is unclear what the status of the plans is at the moment. Dropcam is a company founded in 2009 that offers a $150 security camera that streams its footage over the internet so users can view it on their phone, tablet or computer, no matter where they are.
In addition, last year the company introduced software that can recognize people in the images and there is the accessory Dropcam Tabs: an optional motion sensor with an accelerometer and magnetometer. If Google indeed has plans for an acquisition, the group seems to want to get a foothold in the home automation market. Last year, Google acquired Nest, among others, which has developed a smart thermostat and smoke detector. Competitor Apple would introduce software for the iPhone next week, with which devices in the home can be controlled separately and with which the Cupertino company wants to enter the market for internet of things.
