Sony puts plans for OLED TVs on hold
Sony has stopped its plans to release OLED televisions to better focus on the development of UHD TVs. The manufacturer is of the opinion that the demand for OLED TVs remains low, while it has a significant share of the growing UHD market.
Not only would Sony believe that there is no demand for OLED TVs for the time being, but the lead LG and Samsung have in this area also plays a role, writes the Japanese newspaper Nikkei. Sony therefore wants to focus on increasing its market share in the field of UHDTVs. The teams that are still working on OLED TVs are reportedly going to work in the UHD TV departments.
The move can also be seen as part of the concern to reduce costs in an effort to make the TV business profitable. Sony is in the process of restructuring to cut costs for personnel in its consumer products departments by 20 percent.
The Japanese group is currently responsible for 20 percent of worldwide UHDTV sales. This summer Sony will release eight UHD models, compared to four last year. All TV manufacturers have high hopes for sales of TVs with the 4k resolution. Those models have a relatively high price, which allows the companies to make more profit on them than on the mainstream TVs.
