Oculus aims for a MMO with a billion users
Oculus aims to create an MMO that will be accessible through its VR glasses. Brenden Iribe, CEO of Oculus, made this known in an interview with TechCrunch. In total, the mmo should support up to one billion players simultaneously.
Iribe admits in the interview that to get one billion players in one MMO at the same time, a much larger network is needed than currently exists. “Facebook is a good start, it could well become a metaverse that can join other virtual worlds,” said Iribe. He thinks Oculus can learn a lot from the way Facebook handles things like privacy and account security. Something he believes is a critical factor in building a trusted social platform.
The platform should bring all the emotions from the real world to virtual reality. People should get trembling legs when looking at an abyss and become claustrophobic in tight spaces, according to Ibire. ”Something that is impossible to achieve with 2D screens,” says Iribe. Oculus could realize the MMO with the money it received from its sale to Facebook in March this year. Facebook then paid about 1.45 billion euros for the company.
