Amazon acquires comics platform Comixology
Amazon has acquired Comixology, a company that has developed a platform for publishing and selling digital comics. Amazon probably wants the service to be part of its own digital content offering.
The online department store announced the deal with Comixology itself. It was also not disclosed how much is being paid for the company. Amazon states that it wants to sell more digital comic books with Comixology. That makes it likely that Amazon will make Comixology’s software part of its digital content offering, although no specific plans were announced.
Comixology makes software for the distribution and sale of digital comics. On his website, customers can buy comic books, but it is also possible to read stories for free. Comixology has apps for iOS and Android, but is also already available on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet. It’s unclear whether the mobile apps will remain available now that Comixology comes into the hands of Amazon. Both parties expect the deal to close this quarter.
