Hackers have managed to break into the multimedia service Boxee.tv and steal the data of 158,000 users. They were given usernames, passwords, forum messages and IP addresses, among other things.

Arstechnica reports this on the basis of a file that is circulating on the Internet and contains the aforementioned user data. The file, which is approximately 800MB in size, contained e-mail addresses and hashed passwords, among other things. In addition, the hackers also obtained forum messages, IP addresses, dates of birth, previously used passwords and other personal information.

The hackers probably got in through Boxee.tv’s vBulletin forum software. It turns out that only data stored via the forum has come into the hands of hackers. In addition, a screenshot came out showing that the hackers have left a message on the forum. User accounts for the media software itself do not appear to have been stolen.

Boxee was acquired by Samsung last summer for $30 million. The company makes media center software based on XBMC, but previously also came on the market with media player hardware. Boxee has not yet commented on the hack. Security service LastPass has warned customers whose names appeared in the hacked database to change their passwords.
