Japan Display begins delivery of 5.5″ display with 2560×1440 pixels

Japan Display has announced that it will deliver a 5.5″ screen with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels from next month. The screen is rumored to be used by Apple in the iPhone 6. Several smartphone manufacturers want such screens.

According to Japan Display, mass production of the new panel can be started, the company announced on its English-language website. It is a 5.5″ LCD with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, which equates to a pixel density of 538 ppi. Starting next month, Japan Display will supply its new panel to manufacturers who have placed orders. The 5.5″- screen was previously shown by the manufacturer, a joint venture of Toshiba, Sony and Hitachi.

Although Japan Display does not name customers, there are rumors that Apple wants to use the screen developed by Japan Display in the iPhone 6. Earlier, rumors have come out that Apple wants to release models with a screen that is larger than the current 4″ of the iPhone 5 series. Reportedly, the manufacturer will present the iPhone 6 in September.

Apple is probably not the only one who wants to use such panels. It has long been rumored that other smartphone manufacturers, such as HTC and Samsung, are working on devices with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. However, the recently presented flagships HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S5 still have a full HD resolution.
