LG releases smartphone-controlled LED lamps

LG has announced that it will introduce LED lamps that can be operated with an Android or iOS smartphone. It is also possible to have the LED lamps light up when the user is called.

The lamps were announced by LG in its home country, South Korea. Two versions will be released, one of which can display different colors. Users can control the LED lights with an Android or iOS smartphone, requiring at least Android 4.3 or iOS 6.0.

In addition to turning the lamps on and off, LG has added several features. For example, it is possible to use the lamps as an alarm: instead of making a sound, the device switches on the lamps. It is also possible to have the LEDs light up during an incoming telephone call. Users can create a schedule to indicate when the lights should turn on and off automatically. Finally, there is a ‘play mode’, in which light effects are generated based on played music. This feature is only available for Android users.

LG will sell the lamps for approximately 23 euros. It is unclear if and when the LEDs will come to Europe. The manufacturer could compete with Philips, which already offers smartphones controllable lamps with its Hue series.
