Municipality: free wifi in the entire city center of Utrecht
The municipality of Utrecht wants to roll out free WiFi throughout the city centre. This was announced by the College of Mayor and Aldermen. The city is investing 100,000 euros in the roll-out of the Wi-Fi network.
At the moment, Utrecht already has Wi-Fi on four squares in the city center, but if it is up to the current council, it will be expanded to the entire city, the municipality has announced. According to the college, the Wi-Fi network is especially popular with visitors to the city.
The network should be free and should not carry any advertisements, the municipality says. The rollout will cost at least 100,000 euros. It is not known which company should roll out the network. It is not known whether the Wi-Fi network should be extended to the rest of the city in the future; the council could not be reached for comment.
The announcement comes just as municipal elections are taking place. It is therefore not yet certain that the plans will go ahead: a new council could abandon the plans.
