First version of Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates

Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows 10 version 1507. That is the first version of the operating system that came out in July 2015. The old build will no longer receive security updates or other improvements.

On its support website, Microsoft reports that support for version 1507 will end after Tuesday. Since the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has released two major feature updates. Presumably there are few users who are still running version 1507 of Windows 10. Most users receive updates automatically.

Users can check which version their system is running on by typing ‘winver’ in the Windows search function. The most recent version, released as the Creators Update, has version number 1703. Users must install at least version 1511 to receive security updates.

According to Microsoft’s policy, major feature updates must be installed within 60 days of their release. After that, the software company no longer guarantees updates. With version 1507, that period was extended, but now support for that version has finally come to an end.

Support for the old version will end for Windows 10 Home, Pro, Education and Enterprise. There are two special versions that will continue to receive security updates: Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2015 LTSB.

Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 users for a total of ten years, provided users continue to update. According to Microsoft’s overview, mainstream support for the OS will end on October 13, 2020, while extended support, which consists only of security updates, will continue until October 14, 2025.
