User successfully equips RX 480 graphics card with RX 580 BIOS
A user of the TechPowerUp forum has successfully upgraded his XFX RX 480 video card with the bios of the Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+. This gave him a GPU speed of 1411MHz on his card, higher than he previously achieved with overclocking.
TonybonJoby describes in a forum topic how he flashed his XFX RX 480 video card. According to him, the card with the RX 580 bios works stably with The Witcher 3 and while running 3DMark. The XFX card used has a standard boost clock of 1288MHz, with overclocking he could increase that to 1350MHz.
The bios used comes from the Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+. With that video card, the boost clock is set to 1411MHz, so higher than what the user achieved with overclocking his RX 480. TechPowerUp notes that the RX 480 cards in combination with an RX 580 bios may overclock better due to adjustments in the bios. which means that the gpu can draw more current. TonybonJoby does say that the card crashes immediately if he sets the speed even higher than 1411MHz.
It is not certain whether the biosflash works successfully in all cases on RX 480 cards and actually enables higher clock speeds. The XFX video card TonybonJoby used has a dual bios, so he could easily switch back to the original bios in the event of a failure.
