Photo of prototype Samsung Galaxy S8+ shows dual camera

Photos have appeared online of a prototype of the Samsung Galaxy S8+. The model has a vertically oriented dual camera, while no fingerprint scanner is visible at the back. The final version does not have the dual camera.

The dual camera has two lenses that appear slightly different, while below the cameras is the flash along with another element, presumably the heart rate sensor. The photos, which Weibo user Zealer posted online, show a working model and not a dummy.

The photos seem to show that Samsung was indeed experimenting with a dual camera on the back of the S8+. The information does not make clear what the added value of the second sensor should have been. There are several uses for dual cameras, including enabling black and white photos or a different angle of view.

In addition, the fingerprint scanner is not visible at the back. Presumably, the manufacturer assumed that it would be possible to place the scanner in the screen, something that did not happen in the end. Due to the thin bezels, the fingerprint scanner is squeezed.

Samsung is releasing the Galaxy S8 and S8+, both without a dual camera, this week. The cheapest model will be available for 799 euros, while Samsung will ask 899 euros for the S8+.
