Former ‘MythBuster’ Builds Team ‘Iron Man’ Suit That Can Fly

Former MythBusters host Adam Savage teamed up with the Colorado School of Mines and company Gravity Industries to create an “Iron Man” suit. The suit is based on a model from the Marvel movies, the Mark II. The equipment can fly through five jet engines.

In a video, CNet shows behind-the-scenes footage of the first episode of Adam Savage’s new series, Savage Builds. The former MythBusters host teamed up with the Colorado School of Mines and Gravity Industries to create a working “Iron Man” suit. Savage in the suit can fly about five meters high in the air, thanks to the presence of five mini jet engines with a total power of one thousand horsepower. These are gas turbines from the English inventor Richard Browning, who founded the company Gravity Industries for this purpose. Browning has been working on such jetpack suits for years.

The suit itself was made from titanium using a 3D printer, based on a model from the Marvel movies, the Mark II. Furthermore, the materials of the suit consist of nylon, fiberglass and urethane. The suit moves along where the fingers and joints are located.

Savage himself does not fly in the suit in the video because he considers himself too inexperienced with the jet engines. In his new series, Savage focuses on one project per episode. The first episode will be about the ‘Iron Man’ suit, and upcoming episodes will feature other notable construction projects, such as the Panjandrum, a rocket-propelled cart with two large wheels. The Iron Man suit episode can only be viewed in the US via Discovery.
