Sony releases 13.3″ e-reader with 1650×2200 resolution in Japan

Sony has announced the DPT-RP1 in its home country of Japan. It is an update of his existing 13.3 “e-reader, which now has a higher resolution and is thinner and lighter. The price is converted almost 700 euros.

The DPT-RP1 is the successor to the DPT-S1 announced in 2013. The resolution has been increased from 1200×1600 pixels to 1650×2200 pixels. The upgrade also provides support for WiFi-ac instead of just WiFi-n and there is also support for Bluetooth 4.2. The processor is a 64-bit IAP140 quad-core from Marvell and there is 16GB of storage memory, of which 11GB is usable as standard.

The DPT-RP1 measures 224×302.6×5.9mm and weighs 349 grams. The predecessor weighed 358 grams and was 233mm wide by 310mm long, with a thickness of 6.8mm. In combination with a pen you can make notes on the screen.

Sony mainly focuses on business use, such as in the medical, financial or legal sector. The device therefore does not support e-books in formats such as EPUB but only PDFs. The price also makes it clear that it is a business device: Sony charges 80,000 yen, converted 681 euros. Sony has stopped making consumer e-readers since 2014.
