The OpenElec development team has released version 8.0 of the entertainment-focused Linux distribution. The software makes the switch from Kodi version 16 to 17 and now includes support for the Raspberry Pi Zero W.

Due to the move from Kodi 16 to 17.1 Krypton, the developers recommend that users create a full backup before performing a manual update. From this release, the Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Center can handle the Raspberry Pi Zero W, the small and inexpensive mini computer that appeared at the end of February.

In addition, there is support for two Android players from WeTek, the Play 2Play 2 and the small WeTek Hub. The release of version 8.0 of OpenElec also marks some updates to components of the underlying operating system. For example, the Linux kernel makes the switch from version number 4.4 to 4.9 and X.org has been updated to 1.19. Also present are llvm 4.0, ffmpeg 3.2 and Libre SSL 2.4.

Parts have also been removed. For example, support for hfs, hfs+, isci and the outdated Linux Infrared Remote Control has been removed and the driver for the Apple TV 1 ir remote control has been removed.

Last year a fork appeared in the form of LibreElec. It arose after a large number of developers left OpenElec due to disagreements and started their own business. OpenElec 8.0 can be downloaded here.
