Entire 1969 moon landing mission can be viewed on interactive website

A new website lets viewers watch the full Apollo 11 mission to the moon. The “Apollo In Real Time” site features original images and photos from NASA, as well as a timeline of the historic mission.

The website apolloinrealtime.org shows the entire Apollo 11 mission from about twenty hours before launch to when astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins arrive at the aircraft carrier that received them after landing. The website shows the timeline in sync with the ground elapsed time, the official counter used during the mission. Viewers can follow the event ‘live’, but also scroll through a timeline for specific moments. The website is made by Ben Feist, a historian at NASA. He used original material from the space agency.

For example, the website contains transcripts of the exchanges between the astronauts and mission control, as well as original audio files that can be listened to. In total there are more than 11,000 hours of audio on the website. They are arranged by mission component. For example, it is possible to listen to the official capcom, but also to, for example, the mission doctors or the guidance systems. in addition to audio, video material can be viewed from mission control and images taken by the astronauts themselves in space.

July marks the 50th anniversary of the historic moon landing. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 21, 1969. NASA is holding many activities around the anniversary this year.
