Qualcomm will no longer call budget socs Snapdragon

Qualcomm is making changes to the naming convention for its socs. The models in the current Snapdragon 200 series will no longer bear the Snapdragon name, but will be called Qualcomm Mobile. The designer no longer speaks of processors, but of a platform.

Qualcomm says putting the budget socs in a separate series will help customers better differentiate between entry-level and high-end devices. The first visible result of the naming changes is that the cheapest socs from the current Snapdragon 200 series will no longer have a Snapdragon designation. Qualcomm says it will implement the naming changes for its socs in the coming months.

Although Qualcomm says it will only use the Snapdragon name for premium socs from now on, the chip designer will continue to use the name for models in the 400 and 600 series, in addition to the top models such as the Snapdragon 821 and 835.

Furthermore, Qualcomm says it will no longer call its socs “processor.” Until now, for example, the company spoke of the Snapdragon 835 processor. From now on, the chip designer will speak of platforms, for example the Snapdragon 835 platform. That should make it clearer that it is not just a processor, but a soc that consists of a cpu and gpu and other techniques, including Qualcomm Quick Charge.
