‘Google wants to integrate VoIP function into Gmail’
Google is currently in the process of testing a VoIP service to be included in the Gmail webmail service. The interface of the web service is said to be very similar to Google Voice, a VoIP service that has been piloting in the US for several years.
Making phone calls would be possible from the Google Chat window in the Gmail environment, reports cnet. This section in the left navigation bar has been used until now for sending instant messaging messages. Phone numbers could be dialed from the contact list, while a screenshot also shows that calling credit can be used.
Google has declined to comment on its potential plans to integrate a VoIP client into Gmail, but the search giant now appears to be working on integrating technology developed by the acquired Gizmo5. Google has been offering the chat application Google Talk with a voice chat function for some time, while in the US it offers the Google Voice service. This allows landlines in Canada and the United States to be called free of charge, while international calls must be paid.
