Samsung has announced controllers for a USB-C port with which it should be possible to charge a smartphone with 100W. This then happens at 20 volts and 5 amps. Samsung may use the new fast charging technology for its upcoming smartphones.

According to the Korean manufacturer, it concerns two new power controllers, named SE8A and MM101. Flash memory is built in so that manufacturers can program the firmware if desired, after which a maximum charging power of 100 watts can be achieved. The chips used comply with the USB-PD 3.0 specification. The MM101 also gives the option to use AES encryption, according to Samsung.

The SE8A is the first chip to be released, with Samsung indicating that mass production has already started. It is not known whether there are already interested manufacturers who want to use the power controllers in their products. According to Samsung, the MM101 is currently being sampled, but it is still unclear when mass production will start.

The Korean manufacturer may also use the controllers in its own smartphones. Smartphone manufacturers are competing on how fast it can charge, so the 100W fast-charging technology is likely to be seen in future Galaxy smartphones.
