The French magazine Canard PC claims that Intel is coming with two new processors in response to the introduction of the AMD Ryzen CPUs. It would be the i7-7740K and the i5-7640K, with a TDP of more than 100 watts and slightly higher speeds. The i5 may also have hyperthreading.

Several sources confirm the existence of the new Intel CPUs versus Canard PC. Intel is said to have started sending samples to customers. The Core i7-7740K is a quad-core with hyperthreading, 8MB L3 cache and a clock speed of 4.3GHz. It is not known what the boost speed is, but according to the magazine it is probably 4.6GHz. The Core i5-7640K has a speed of 4GHz and 6MB l3 cache.

Initially, the French magazine reported that the Core i5-7640K will get hyperthreading. If true, it would be the first quad-core processor from the Core i5 series with hyperthreading. However, after the article was published, Canard PC received conflicting information from various sources regarding the presence of hypertreading. The French say they will receive a sample of the chip at the end of this week and then announce whether hyperthreading is actually present.

So far, of the Intel quad-cores, only the Core i7 processors have hyperthreading. AMD will probably also provide its lower-ranked Ryzen processors with four and six cores with simultaneous multithreading. That’s the AMD equivalent of hyperthreading, giving the processors twice as many threads as the number of cores they have.

With the Kaby Lake generation, Intel has already added hyperthreading to its dual-core Pentium processors. With dual cores, the functionality was previously reserved for the Core i3 series.
