The Kodi team has released the stable release of version 17 of its media player software. It is called ‘Krypton’ and it introduces, among other things, a new look of the software and changes to the pvr and live TV functions.

The new Kodi version has been in the works for some time, so a beta version appeared in the Windows Store in September after the first beta in August. Krypton is the first Kodi release available through the Windows Store, the team said. The first release candidate of the media player software followed at the end of December. It featured many of the new features, including the ability to select a video stream in the same way as an audio stream.

In addition, changes have been made to the PVR and Live TV function. For example, there are now more than fifteen new add-ons, many of which have been provided with updates. The interface has been revamped and browsing should be a lot faster in the new version, according to the Kodi team. On the audio front, support for additional streaming protocols has been added, and support for the official audio API has been added on Android. Kodi requires at least Android 5.0 since the new release.

In the announcement, the team writes that version 17 is now available for Windows, Android, macOS and iOS. As previously seen, this release features a new default skin called Estuary. This replaces the Confluence skin that was included by default in previous versions of the software. The Estouchy skin can be used on devices with a touchscreen. An overview of all new functions can be found in an extensive changelog. Krypton is available from Kodi’s download page.
