Mozilla fires staff who worked on Internet-of-things version Firefox

Mozilla has cut its workforce by about 50 employees. The layoffs fell within the branch that had to develop an internet-of-things version of the Firefox browser. According to the browser builder, a changing focus is the reason for the layoffs.

That reports Cnet, based on unspecified sources. The layoffs were later confirmed by a Mozilla spokesperson. One of the people who has been fired is CEO Ari Jaaksi, who is responsible for the team within the company that worked on the Internet-of-things version of Firefox.

According to a statement released by Mozilla, development of the Internet-of-things version of Firefox is halted due to shifted priorities. The browser builder wants to focus more on R&D and the iot branch is therefore the victim of this. In total, about 50 people lose their jobs.

For the desktop, Mozilla continues to work on improvements for Firefox. For example, the company recently announced that the browser should be faster than competitor Chrome by the end of this year. Due to the extensive use of Firefox OS in recent years, the browser has not received enough attention, according to Mozilla.
