Rumor: Apple wants to process fingerprint scanner behind iPhone screen

According to an analyst, Apple is working on new unlocking methods for the iPhone. For example, there should be a new version of Touch ID that can be processed behind the screen. In the long run, Apple would even like to trade in Touch ID for facial recognition.

The reporting comes from Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI, who has a good reputation in this area, 9to5Mac reports. According to the analyst, Apple wants to get rid of the bezels around the iPhone, and a future version of the fingerprint scanner must therefore be processed behind the screen. A new type of optical sensor is being developed for this. However, when it could be introduced is not yet known, because the development is still at an early stage, according to Kuo. Apple would use technology it acquired after its acquisition of AuthenTec in 2013.

In addition, Apple is reportedly working on facial recognition. This could serve as a new method for unlocking and other forms of security, and could eventually also serve as a replacement for the fingerprint. First of all, however, both forms of biometrics seem to be used side by side, and the phasing out of Touch ID is something for the distant future.

Because Apple itself has not released anything about the features in its future iPhones, Kuo’s reporting cannot be verified. However, earlier reports have come out about a new version of Touch ID and the introduction of facial recognition.
