Kojima put project similar to TV series The Boys ‘on hold’

Game maker Hideo Kojima says he has put a project on hold because the concept was similar to that of TV series The Boys. Kojima planned to give actor Mads Mikkelsen the lead role.

Kojima says he watched some episodes of The Boys when that Amazon Prime Video series came out in 2019. In their own words he was then about to embark on a project he had been thinking about for a long time. Because of the similar concept, he decided to put the project on hold.

The TV series The Boys is about a world in which superheroes under the care of a commercial company use their powers. To the audience they present themselves as heroes, but behind the scenes the superheroes and the company abuse their powers. A group of civilians discovers this and takes on the corrupt superheroes.

According to Kojima, the concept of his project similar, but the setting was ‘very different’. He talks about ‘dark story’, in which a human takes on a superhero. He also talks about a team of special detectives who take on legendary heroes ‘behind the scenes’. According to Kojima, the leading role is reserved for the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. It also plays an important role in Death Stranding, Kojima’s latest game.

It is unknown whether Kojima plans to ever pick up the project again. The game maker does not clarify this. It is not clear whether it was a game or another media project. At the end of last year, Kojima Productions opened a division that will make TV series and films. In his recent tweets, the Japanese only talks about a ‘project’.

As far as we know, Kojima Productions is currently working on a successor to Death Stranding and in collaboration with Microsoft on an Xbox game that uses cloud technology. That should be a ‘completely new’ game that ‘no one has ever experienced or seen before’.

According to leaker Tom Henderson, Kojima Productions is working on horror game Overdose with actress Margaret Qualley, who plays Mama in Death Stranding. Henderson thinks Overdose is the game being made in collaboration with Microsoft. That project would were originally conceived as an exclusive to Google Stadia, but were not pursued by Google.
