LG has announced that it is not emphasizing modular design with its upcoming G6 device. With this, the company says it is responding to feedback from consumers, which shows that they are not interested in modular phones.

This makes the technical director of LG Skott Ahn known in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He says his company struggled to convince consumers to pay extra for the Friends modules of the G5, which the company introduced for its most recent V20 device. That device was not modular, but the company promised to continue with the concept. This promise now seems to be breaking with the G6, according to Ahn, the emphasis is more on the appearance and ease of use of the smartphone.

At the end of December, renders of the G6 without a modular design had already surfaced. Before that, a South Korean site already claimed that the phone would not use modules. The spokesperson tells the newspaper that it is not an option to divest the smartphone branch of the company. In doing so, he is responding to the disappointing results of this industry.

He adds that the G6 should be released “very soon”, but that no definitive release date has been set yet. The phone will initially be released in Europe, the US and South Korea. The device should be a comparable price to the G5. It initially cost seven hundred euros.
